Health starts in the kitchen

The old adage of you are what you eat is more true than people realize. Without good nutrition the body first turns to things like our bones to get minerals, muscles to get amino acids, ect. In short, the body will eat itself to try and survive.

The above video gives an excellent perspective on why people seem to be obsessed about things called “superfoods”. A superfood is any food with a very high nutritional content.
Part of the reason it is so hard to meet our own nutritional needs is only partially due to the average North American diet, and partially due to farming practices that have heavily depleted the soils our farmers have to work with. Unfortunately simply getting organic foods will not increase the nutritional content unless the farmer is actively improving soil quality.

Nutritional quality of organic foods: a systematic review

When it comes to nutrition do what you and/or your family can afford. If you can find a local farm share that takes care of their soil, awesome! If it’s superfoods. Awesome! If it is a food based supplement like Garden of Life. Still awesome.
The key to nutrition once you know the above, is in learning how to cook well. Everyone can learn to command their health from the kitchen, just take it one step at a time and NEVER SKIM THE INSTRUCTIONS. Also don’t walk away from the stove while you are learning. That is how fires get started lol. When learning to cook take the time to invest in quality tools. Good quality pots and pans, along with a couple of good knives can save you massive quantities of frustration. You don’t need every fancy gadget to matter how shiny it is. Really, I promise. Most of them will actually frustrate you when they don’t work as advertised. Cooking in large batches and freezing the extra can save time and money. You’ve got this. I believe in you!
